TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.

Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Material Elimination

Based on TikTok, the service has removed violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Operations

Research also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with numerous of members, filled with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.

After moments of entering one community, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages show dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for Telegram said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
